On parade day, the local members of the Orange are out in strength but an assassin's bullet, which may have been intended for Mayor Hopkins, kills an Alderman. The police have conflicting reports of where the gun shot came from but Murdoch quickly locates the room from where the gun was fired. Brackenreid orders Murdoch to round up the usual trouble makers - mostly Irish Catholics - but he makes little headway. Murdoch sees Dr. Ogden for the first time since his return and her protégé Dr. Emily Grace conducts the autopsy and is impressed with her interpretation what happened. At the event, Detective Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) is charmed by Dr. Iris Bajjali (Athena Karkanis), an archeologist involved in the recent discovery. But when one of the other expedition archaeologists opens the sarcophagus for the audience, a cobra strikes and he's killed instantly. An explosion at a market shop knocks Constables Crabtree (Jonny Harris) and Higgins (Lachlan Murdoch) to the street. Peter Milne (Brock Johnson), the irate shopkeeper, demands to Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) that the police cover his considerable losses. But with Higgins seriously injured in the blast, Brackenreid is enraged by his selfishness. Detective Murdoch investigate the shooting death of inventor Karl Schreyer who was shot at an inventor's convention. He was very much disliked by his fellow inventors who accused him of stealing their ideas for his own use. He had contacted Murdoch after receiving a threatening note and he was there when Schreyer was shot giving his thank you speech for winning the Eaton Prize for most commercially viable invention in this case, a vacuum cleaner. Murdoch's biggest problem is to figure out just how an assassin could shoot him without being seen. While the evidence points to other inventors as responsible for the murder, an invention by Alexander Graham Bell provides the solution to the crime. Detective Murdoch is called out to a remote house when one of the guests, Jacob Oliver, is murdered. There he finds Dr. Grace who was also a guest in the house. It's quickly apparent to Murdoch that something is wrong and he finally learns the truth: everyone there was playing cards to see who would have the privilege to die. Dr. Grace and her friends have been seeking to glimpse the afterlife by inducing death and then bringing the person back to life. There is no doubt one of the card players was killed however - he has a piece of metal in his throat. Back at the station, Inspector Brackenreid and Constable Crabtree are guarding Ned Watts, a man who has agreed to give evidence against the notorious killer known as Randolph the Razor. When he winds up the toy, it mentions Murdoch by name and asks if he wants to play. Murdoch traces the doll to a blond woman living in a hotel where he surprisingly finds Veronica safe and sound. She has a doll for him that has yet another message for the detective. Dr. Julia Ogden drops in at the station unexpectedly and suggests that someone Murdoch may have previously arrested is now out for revenge. She's right and now he's kidnapped Dr. Ogden. Simpson had earlier had a punch-up with his teammate Eddie Driscoll, who happens to be George Crabtree's old friend and the man who married, Lydia, a woman George had once been interested in. The team is owned by Langston Wallace who for the first time has a team that may win the Stanley Cup. There was tension on the team as well with new players arriving and rumors that one of them may be a paid professional, the scourge of hockey. The man behind it all is Dr. Harms and as his time machine begins to gain believers, he seems to be making a fortune. Murdoch is convinced there is a realistic scientific explanation for what is happening.
