Murdoch is in Bristol, England, with no memory of who he is and two gunmen chasing him through the streets. With the help of a local pub Landlady he starts to piece together an assassination plot. Detective Murdoch investigates the murder of Alexander Taylor who is found in his living room on his birthday obviously having been attacked with a ax. The case seems open and shut however when they find the man's daughter Charlotte sitting on her bed with the murder weapon in her hands. Charlotte admits that she must have killed her father but has no memory of it. She also says she often has no memory when she is possessed by the devil. During an interrogation however another character, Maddie, emerges leading Murdoch to conclude that there are two personalities in the same body. He consults Dr. Roberts, who has helped him in the past, who recommends they try hypnosis. What they find is that she has more than two personalities. Detective Murdoch investigates the theft of a valuable Rembrandt painting. He attended its unveiling at a lavish reception and saw the painting go on the elevator on the 11th floor and go directly to the first floor where Constables Crabtree and Higgins were waiting for it to arrive. When the doors open, all they find is a dead security officer and no sign of the painting or how it might have been removed. He soon finds the thieves, both dead, but there is no sign of the painting. They were professional thieves from Chicago and Murdoch determines that it is all part of a scheme to sell forgeries of the painting in question. While he tracks down the forger, he's not sure he's tracked down the mastermind behind the scheme. Written by garykmcd

Detective Murdoch deals with an interesting assortment of suspects when a circus animal trainer Kitty Walker is found dead, apparently attacked by the tiger in her charge. When the circus tries to leave town hurriedly, Murdoch has them all arrested and the station house is soon filled a variety of exotic characters. The manager, Pierre Barnett, had found her half-eaten inside inside the tiger's cage and it all seems to be nothing more than an accident until Dr. Ogden's autopsy reveals the animal had likely been starved for several days before the attack. Her autopsy of Kitty also shows that she was murdered - and not by the tiger, but stabbed in the throat. Kitty's best friend Ivy points the finger at the hirsute Count Leoline who in turn points to the magician. Detective Murdoch receives a mysterious invitation to attend a reception and with Dr. Ogden in tow finds himself at a promotional affair hosted by James Pendrick. Murdoch doesn't support the selective breeding philosophy of eugenicists and is leery of Pendrick whom he is convinced had engineered the theft of his own art collection in an insurance scam. He is impressed with the guest of honor however, the renowned author H.G. Wells. When body parts are discovered in a nearby pond, Murdoch has a murder to investigate. The dead man turns out to be a well-known member of the Eugenics Society. Dr. Ogden sees her sister Ruby and is somewhat shocked by her dalliance with the often married Wells. Detective Murdoch is on the case when police discover two bodies at a building construction site. Their initial estimate is that the bodies have been there for about 5 years but the remains are found in a peat bog and as a result are very well preserved. Both bodies, one man and one woman, are approximately 40 years old and Dr. Ogden's examination reveals that they were both poisoned with cyanide. Further evidence however shows that both bodies have been there for at least 22 years. But that's incorrect as well as further evidence then points to 1836 as the likely year of death. Murdoch manages to locate locate the now elderly daughter of the victims, Rebecca Hastings and her husband Charlie. He also realizes that either she or her husband killed her parents or possibly one of the three foster children who also lived there at the time, Alice Nugent, Horace Mooney or Michael Webster. Detective Murdoch investigates the suspicious death of Chauncey Beaton who has fallen, or was pushed or jumped, off his balcony. The servants claim the house is cursed and it is responsible for his death. The dead man's brother Ronald was in the house and another brother, Byron, was en route to a business meeting. Some of the servants heard Chauncey shouting his half-brother Timothy's name but Timothy had killed himself the previous February. Several of the household staff claim to have seen Timothy's ghost. The Beaton family has a long history of suspicious deaths and Murdoch believes one of the remaining brothers is responsible, presumably eliminating the other brothers in order to inherit the estate. Detective Murdoch investigates a bizarre case when a convicted murderer apparently manages to survive the hangman's noose. When Cecil Fox's body is delivered to Dr. Ogden for a post-mortem, she finds a hollow tube inserted in his throat and Fox very much alive. It seems the managed to survive by inserting the tube, thus allowing him to breathe, and by having the hangman's rope shortened so as to ensure that his neck isn't broken. Murdoch and Brackenreid immediately focus on the hangman, Theodore Pleasant, as being complicit in the escape. Brackenreid and Pleasant are good friends but the police Inspector has to admit that it doesn't look good for his friend. With Crabtree and Higgins manning a stakeout, Murdoch realizes that there may have been a miscarriage of justice and that Fox was in fact innocent of the crime for which he was convicted. While out for a stroll, Detective Murdoch and Dr. Ogden soon find they have a murder on their hands when an attractive young woman is found strangled in the park. When Murdoch and Constable Crabtree search the woman's lodgings, they find some very risqué photographs of the young woman leading them straight to a known pornographer, Marcus Evans. He denies having anything to do with the young woman's death but Murdoch is shocked to find photos of Sally Pendrick, whose husband James he has long suspected of criminal activity. Mrs. Pendrick eventually admits to having posed for the photos and that she is now being blackmailed. When Murdoch accompanies her to a meeting with her blackmailer, they are nearly killed but it all seems too easy for Murdoch who thinks someone was out to kill her all along. Dr. Ogden meanwhile is growing impatient with her life. Her romance with Murdoch seems to be going nowhere and she is now seriously considering an offer to practice medicine away from Toronto. Detective Murdoch investigates the death by electrocution of Morris Garbutt, a former research associate of the famous Nikola Tesla. Tesla has been experimenting with a new form of energy that is transmitted through the air, called microwaves. The evidence points to James Pendrick, but he is in jail. Murdoch soon realizes he has been a fool, about many things, and sets his sights on the perpetrator of this and several other crimes. Dr. Ogden tells Murdoch she is seriously considering an offer to be the head of pediatric surgery at a new hospital in Buffalo.
