The judges are impressed with the caliber of contestants this year. The competition is tough as many of the contestants have some experience and can dance right out of the chute.

Julienne Hough returns as a guest judge in Len's absence. Injuries continue to impact the competition as three contestants perform with injured knees, one with a injured shoulder, one with a virus and two narrowly avoid concussions.

Cher joins the show as a guest performer and judge in Len's absence as the contestants dance to Cher hits. In addition to their individual routines contestants have to prepare for any of three styles in a head-to-head dance-off.

After performing the traditional pairs dances each couple chooses a second pro to perform with them in the trio dance. Leah, Tony and Henry parody the judges; Carrie Ann, Bruno and Len.

For the semifinals the six couples perform two dances to two different versions of the same song in an evening heavy with tangos. Maks returns as a guest judge.

Kellie Pickler returns as a quest performer. Contestants perform a ballroom dance that they previously struggled with, a samba relay with TLC performing their music and the no-holds-barred freestyle.
