The 10th season of Dancing with the Stars kicked off with a rundown of the show's history by the numbers. There have been 27 pros, 104 celebrities and 818 routines. The couple with the lowest combined judges' scores and public votes for both performances is sent home.

The final of the Big Dance was happening on another network, but Dancing with the Stars was just getting started. After a surprising elimination in which Shannen Doherty was 9021-out, head judge Len Goodman laid out a challenge last week to all the dancers to come up with a performance that would tell a story, but without props or gimmicks. How would they respond? Host Tom Bergeron and co-host Brooke Burke weren't in the mood to drag things out much, getting to the first of the results immediately on Tuesday's Dancing with the Stars results show.The first two couples safe for another week were Aiden and Edyta and Erin and Maks.Len recapped the previous night's performances, saying Jake and Niecy both needed to step up a bit to compete. Niecy said she was taken aback at the start of her performance. Len said Pam's dance was intense, but not neat. Len said there was a slight improvement in Chad's dance, but the same couldn't be said for Aiden. He said Aiden was unable to move because he's too preoccupied with taking in information about the dances he's trying to learn.Len was still upset that Derek and Nicole broke all the quickstep rules, and Nicole said afterward that it was all Derek's fault (she was joking, of course). With Buzz Aldrin gone, it was time for things to get serious on Dancing with the Stars, and, for the first time, the dancers were going to be given two scores: one for technique and another for performance.From the tango, the judges wanted to see passion, drama and precision. They pointed out specifics that they'd be looking for from the dancers who'd be doing the tango. Pros Jonathan Roberts and Anna Demidova showed what a good tango should look like. The judges later said they wanted to see the raunchiness that the rumba demands. A week after soap star Aiden Turner was gone, it was movie night on Dancing with the Stars as the couples performed to music from big-screen classics.Niecy and Louis: Comedian Niecy Nash was trying to bounce back from a rumba the judges though was boring. Louis wanted to make the judges eat it. They rehearsed a jive and Louis wanted Niecy to slide between his legs. She didn't think she could fit. She said the jive is probably the fastest I've ever moved -- well, dancing ... this is a family show. They performed to La Bamba. Niecy shook all kinds of stuff, and capped the dance by planting a big, red-lipstick kiss on Len Goodman's head. Len said Niecy got her personality into the dance, which was great. He said there shouldn't been more bounce in the feet -- there was plenty of bounce in your bazookas. Hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke wasted no time getting to some results on Tuesday night's episode of Dancing with the Stars. They asked the couples at the top and bottom of the judges' leader board to step to the front of the stage. Nicole and Derek and Kate and Tony. They quickly announced that Nicole and Derek were safe and Kate and Tony were in the bottom two for the first time all season.In his recap, Len Goodman called Pam, Jake and Erin the best of the worst and the worst of the best. He grouped Niecy, Kate and Chad at the bottom and said they all need to step up. Following a (of course) tearful good-by from Kate Gosselin last week, seven couples remain. They'll be dancing the Argetine Tango or the samba and will then compete in the swing dance marathon.The couples come out (and as a side note, Pamela Anderson has brown hair for the night).Jake and Chelsie are first with the samba. We see a video of Jake in a Carmen Miranda top (big sleeves, nearly bikini top). He worries because he's not as good a dancer as Evan or Nicole and is trying to catch up. But, go-oolly, the samba's tough, he says.They dance (not a single button on Jake's shirt is being used).Len thinks Jake is showing more confidence (even though he calls him Jack), but lacks rhythm. Bruno thinks it lacked bounce, although Jake nailed the pelvic gyrations. Carrie Ann says he needs to connect to the music. Len likes Jake's commitment and will forgive him kicking the stairs. Len thought Pam's tango had passion but imprecise footwork.Len didn't mind Niecy's funny tango.
