Evers talks Temple into signing an injunction for the ranchers. After hearing about Ah Sing's problem from Grainger, Evers recommends they do not push Temple or he might revoke the injunction. After being jailed for attempting to open the restaurant without a license, Grainger pushes Manstead to represent him. A trio of soldiers are transporting a prisoner across Shiloh property due to a lack of water when they learn after a run in with Trampas it appears the prisoner has scarlet fever. A private runs off with the horses leaving two feuding troopers a foot. Elizabeth and Holly Grainger find the prisoner and troopers stranded inadvertently helping the prisoner escape when Elizabeth runs up to see who is in the wagon. The four walk to Shiloh with the troopers in irons. The Graingers are concerned especially with Elizabeth contracting scarlet fever while Trampas helps the two soldiers who have their own internal feud try to recapture the prisoner. However, Trampas is plagued with flashbacks of his own history with scarlet fever killing his mother and brother. The soldiers are more concerned with killing the prisoner to cover up their mistakes while Trampas wants to safely recapture the prisoner who will do anything to prove his meddle. Elizabeth is persuaded by Jim he really has a good side and she is torn on whether to help his gang find him by putting a tepee symbol on the gate to the ranch. Meanwhile, in Medicine Bow Hicks finds a group of drifters willing to help for $100 in gold each as Dewey has a $5,000 bounty on his head. They find a deserted homestead to take shelter in while waiting out the storm which luckily happens to have some supplies stored in it. While there others start showing up beginning with Marcus and Angela Van Owen who are on vacation but apparently got lost. Trampas recognizes the wife as as a crooked dealer he knew as Pearl from years back and her husband is the president of the local bank. Marcus dislocates his shoulder which Trampas is able to set. When the nervous bull knocks a hole in the wall, Trampas and Stacey discover gold coins hidden there. They wonder if meeting the Van Owens is an accident. They become more confused when the bank bookkeeper Hobie Simpson arrives looking for Marcus to tell him the bank was robbed of $10,000 which they find is the amount hidden in the wall.
