In Coleraine in 1990 dentist Colin Howell is a leading member of the Baptist church, married to Lesley with children. He becomes attracted to teacher Hazel Buchanan, also married - to policeman Trevor - and they embark upon an affair, Colin justifying it as being God's will. They are found out by the church's pastor John Hansford and agree to end things but continue to see each other, Hazel finding herself pregnant. Lesley's father gives her a cheque for over two thousand pounds to leave Colin but when he discovers it this gives Colin the idea for a shocking plan of action. Written by don @ minifie-1

Capitalizing on the fact that Lesley had previously attempted suicide and Trevor is desolate at the thought of his wife's infidelity Colin persuades a nervous Hazel to collude in killing their spouses, assuring her that the pair will go to heaven and repeats that it is God's will. The police investigate and are reasonably satisfied that the deceased couple took their own lives out of grief at being betrayed but Pastor Hansford is not convinced and bars Colin from the church. With the coroner concluding that Lesley and Trevor killed themselves Hazel and Colin continue their affair in secret whilst publicly presenting as supportive friends. Hazel however feels guilty and ends the relationship, taking up with new partner Dave. On the rebound Colin meets and later marries Kyle, nanny to his children, to whom he makes a terrible confession which she declines to believe. Colin regards the death of his son as a divine judgement on him but interprets it as God and himself being all square, though Hazel disagrees and refuses to see him again, embracing her new family. As a form of atonement to obtain money for the church Colin invests Lesley's money in a questionable Japanese-based scheme, which results in him losing all the cash. Now fearing damnation he confesses to sexual malpractice with female patients as well as to the double murder.
