In August 1977, psychic investigator Maurice Grosse, in answer to a call from newspaper journalist Doug Bence, visits a house in Enfield where single mother Peggy Hodgson, her daughters Janet (11), Margaret (13) and Billy (7) have reported bizarre events which they attribute to a poltergeist. Moving into the house, Maurice is convinced after a tea pot crashes from a table. He is joined by Guy Playfair, another psychic researcher and author, though Guy is cynical and believes the girls are fabricating evidence as a hoax. Maurice feels a kinship with Janet - also the name of his young daughter who died a year previously - and is reassuring when she believes she brought the ghost home after playing in a graveyard. However when Guy tells Maurice he believes he is too involved to be objective he moves out, leaving Guy to investigate alone. With Guy more convinced the haunting is genuine, Janet is moved to stay with friends but the poltergeist follows her. Against Maurice's wishes, Guy brings in medium Lindy Craine, who seems taken over by a foul-mouthed entity who warns Maurice he is in a house of death. She also seems aware of his loss but he suspects she was tipped off about it. However he agrees to a séance where the entity takes over Janet, naming himself as Joe. With his wife Betty alienated by events, Maurice believes that Joe is Joe Watson, a former occupant of the Hodgsons' house, whose 12 year old daughter also died. He is also displeased to find Guy is writing a book about the haunting but Janet and her sister Margaret are terrified when 'Joe' seems to move from Janet to Margaret. Written by don @ minifie-1

Maurice is dismayed to read in a paper that Janet and Margaret have admitted to faking the haunting but relieved when they explain that they did it to get rid of the unwanted attention of other psychic visitors and to get Maurice to return to them. He gets hold of Joe's ashes and Guy uses them in an attempt to exorcise Janet, which appears to be positive. However some days later and Janet again seems to be taken over by malevolent spirits. Working on Lindy Crane's observation that for Maurice the Hodgsons' house is a house of death Guy realizes that there is only one way to help both Janet and Maurice - and end the Enfield haunting for good.
