The Amazing Race: Family Edition begins with 10 families of four setting off from the Brooklyn Bridge. They are instructed to drive to Mountain Sports in Soho, where they pick up supplies for their journey. The families quickly get lost and begin arguing while making their way, but all eventually reach the supply store.

Several Teams misinterpret a clue, confusing one city landmark for another.

Tensions mount at the airport when families show signs of wear and tear and biting words are exchanged. One racer turns a cumbersome task into playtime, goofing off and annoying her family in the process. After many failed attempts at a task and with no end in sight, elimination seems imminent for one family.

Teams will pass through the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the Talladega Motor Speedway, as well as Fairview Riverside State Park in Madisonville, La., in search of clues that will lead them to their next destination. The intensity of the Race takes its toll on one family member who has a breakdown on the way to the Pit Stop. Another team is paralyzed by fear and panics about whether or not to complete a task. Also, while their cars race side by side on a stretch of highway, one team shows their wild side when they moon another team as they pass.

Teams are ecstatic to trade their car keys for plane tickets to their next destination out of the country.

In an exciting foot race to the mat, Teams are within seconds of each other as they fight exhaustion to claim first prize.

In the first leg of the episode, the teams make their way from Quepos, Costa Rica to Arizona. A Detour requires them to choose between Brush or Barrel, in which they must either paint cart wheels or load sugarcane and then transport it six miles. One family watches as one of their own takes an uncontrollable spin in a car during one of the challenges. Also, racers must leave their fear of heights on the ground as teams endure the flight of a lifetime filled with gravity-defying activities. Meanwhile, the rivalry between two families escalates into a high-speed food fight.

The Amazing race celebrates its 100th episode. During this milestone episode, How's That Face Feel?, one family member amuses the rest of the family with a face plant into the water after plunging down a 60 ft. ramp on THE AMAZING RACE 8. In addition, teams are shocked to receive a clue from an unlikely messenger, an 1,100-pound grizzly bear. Meanwhile, one racer's motor mouth drives fellow teammates crazy.

During a tranquil ride in a hot air balloon, the peace is disturbed when two Teams collide in the air.

The teams set off from their Pit Stop in eastern Montana and receive a clue telling them to fly to Montreal, Canada and then find the basement of the C.D.P. Capital Building in Montreal's underground city. Next they take part in a Detour --- Slide It (travel 22 miles and participate in the sport of curling) or Roll It (travel 23 miles and then roll four logs along a one-hundred foot course.) The Weavers and Linzes both opt for Slide It while the Bransens opt for Roll It and taxi/plane confusion causes great delays. Next they all travel 26 miles to the American Pavilion, built by Buckminster Fuller, where they climb a steep staircase and find a clue directing them to a door called Porte D. They make their way to the Olympic Park and pull departure times --- Linz - 5:50 A.M., Bransen - 5:45 A.M. and Weaver - 5:55 A.M., but the Weavers nearly quit. After departing, the teams are flown by charters to a mystery desination --- Toronto, Canada and then travel to La Tour C.N. (the C.N. Tower)...
