Sunny-natured Britt Pollack arranges a barter deal on laundry, restaurant and his girl friend, all paid for by kidnapping Randy Oaks's bulldog for his ex. His partner, now as unlicensed private investigator, ex-police detective Hank Dolworth, however drags Britt away for a far more serious case. Initially it's just tracking lush old friend Mickie Gosney's daughter Eleanor. In no time the case escalates into a murder, blackmail and huge real estate fraud centered around tycoon Robert Lindus. The corrupt project developer's lawyers manage to discredit the charges, so the boys won't be paid, probably for long, and police detective Mark Gustafson takes the correct suspicion of evidence planting seriously. Desperate for a cash down-payment on his end his ex's home, Hank illegally snoops in police files and drags Britt along in search of a San Diego horse track robbery. It involves fugitive giant Mongo, whom they trap by pretending to extort his loyal girlfriend, and his half-brother, the track accountant. In order to secure a loan, Hank must prove that the bank manager's wife is cheating on him. But what he discovers is much kinkier than infidelity.

Exposed adulterous fraudster Robert Lindus hires the boys trough his surprisingly loyal wife Josephine to help him make bail, despite his assets being frozen, by 'stealing' cash he hid in a secret office safe, with a mysterious key. Britt would refuse, but Hank accepts, for a fat fee and hoping to find out about his lush ex-colleague's murder. Robert Lindus having died in an accident while they prevented him from fleeing with family, Hank and Britt stage a fatal car crash, but the car radio switches on and the mystery soil poison cover up them believes he's alive. They are tailed by a tan-suited detective, who turns out to be top lawyer Ben Zeitlin's detective and troubleshooter Burke. Only after a way out which also saves detective Mark Gustafson's career skin, they learn that the soil report was doctored in order to stop, not save the Montague development project. Dale Komack and his wife Elizabeth 'Beth', who has terminal cancer, hire the Terriers to track down her heirloom sapphire engagement ring. Dale confides in them it's not missing but needs to be retrieved from whoever his mistress sold it to. Once they find it, Beth has her own confessions and requests. Meanwhile, architect Jason Adler gets officially engaged to Hank's ex Gretchen, which inspires Britt to propose formally to Maggie, but she cheats on him with hunky veterinary school professor Gavin after a karaoke night Britt encouraged her to partake in. Britt, who can't make head or tail of Maggie's aloof attitude, protests once more to be the 'partner' whose vote doesn't count, yet agrees to help the boy. His peril recalls to Hank his sister Katie's, which is demonstrated again when she befriends an imaginary, 'neglected' neighbor girl. The duo works out their client is student Adam Fisher, whose crush went out of hand due to malaria medication's psychotic side effects, but he now is in actual trouble, even suicidal. Britt's ex partner in crime Eurico promised to steal back $0,000 in cocaine from a Mexican precinct. To motivate him further, they threaten to capture Katie unless the drugs are delivered by evening. Seeing there mob lawyer Ben Zeitlin and his goon, he can't resist spying on them, then appointing himself protector of the imprudent Internet 'reporter' who threatens to expose a major real estate scam, only to be blackmailed with her mother's safety. Reporter Laura Ross, whose bacon he semi-accidentally saved, thanks Hank by bringing a crucial clue in the case that cost him his badge years ago but also meant meeting Britt. Construction heir Billy Whitman was then the prime suspect in a serial rape case and Hank was caught setting him up with fake 'evidence'. The case is reopened as a previous series in a county nearby is linked Britt bitterly moves out from Katie's place with bulldog Winston. Hank follows a lead from grateful Laura tying lawyer Ben Zeitlin, Gertchen's husband architect Jason Adler and local councilman Sam Albrecht to presumably secretly linked real estate plans. City archive plans and Jason's expertise help realizing it's all about clearing enough space for a new airport for San Diego, which would finish off the whole neighborhood. While Gavin tells Katie that Brit beat him up, the ex-lover strikes a deal with Zeitlin to seduce the law firm employee he suspects of leaking, notably to Laura. Written by KGF Vissers
