Ben furiously assumes in-living mate Dave got his daughter pregnant, but is relieved to find she has an adolescent boyfriend and humbly begs Dave not to move out. The police makes the daughter admit the couple sneaked off, leaving Tommy to be babysat by neighbor Vanessa. Dr. Joseph 'Joe' Richardson, her husband, is most sympathetic to patient Ben, until he discovers the couple 'lost' a son that age in what seems abusive circumstances, finds on Internet he fled England after an abuse scandal and snoops in doc's office. Ben duly doubts his disloyal wife who refuses sex and keeps claiming to be occupied for her realter job. Jogging, Ben finds simpleton neighbor knave Mattie astray in the wood and pains to bring him back, in the process noticing a blood-stained blue jacket, plausibly the killer's, but it's one before he can return and the police doubts his word again. So he investigates the kid's troublesome yet devoted brother Tyler, whom Dave knows to have a weed past, and their confused, evasively-protective mother. Meanwhile Ben's car is vandalized clumsily and a 'prankster' leaves many flashlights in his garage, which the police considers a dangerous threat, indeed followed by more intimidation. After the vandal is out of the way, Ben dismisses police warnings that he needs protection against the pro stalker, but dares not refuse it for his family. Ben makes up by free repairs with Dave, the only one still willing to help with his latest theory, again turning on veteran Scott. Actually Ben is abducted and tortured, even water-boarded, by hostile 'State Department-retired neighbor' Kevin Williams, who demands a 'confession' that he killed his own illegitimate son to cover up his 'disgusting' adultery, but surprising help arrives last moment. Ben fears arrest, his lawyer even insists on a plea bargain unless he can testify a good story, but he still can't recall the fatal night. Surprisingly Dave brings in the murder weapon, which he snatched before the police searched the wooden so they can now dump it at the abandoned torture site. Wife Christy has moved out to her rich brother Michael, bitter enough even to deny Ben a Christas visit to the girls, who end up overhearing the truth. Dave confesses that Ben's blackout was caused by him spiking already too many drinks. They try to reconstruct the night at the bar and afterward, which leads to discovering drunk Ben showed every the ultrasound of a baby boy, but not Tom, rather the one Christy aborted, which he decides to tell the police. Even brother-in-law Michael, who secretly financed her cash nest-egg for years which she now demands, ignores Christy's wish to keep Ben from his kids, allowing him to take Abby to the Christmastide fireworks. He lets Jess come along, but she blocks her out and spoils it by dropping and breaking her smartphone. Ben gets back into bed with Jess, but afterward discovers her addiction to pills which render her occasionally erratic and violent, and finds proof she was in the Woods on the fatal night and lost a baby earlier.
