Olivia and Fitz are enjoying being together. Fitz is hosting a royal family because he's hoping to establish a base in their country. The Princess is an American and when Olivia sees her, she appears to be unhappy. Later the Princess is killed in what appears to be an accident. Olivia is hired by the family to make sure nothing bad comes out. But during her work she learns that the accident may not have been an accident and asks Rosen to look into it. Fitz is worried how this will affect the negotiations for the base. Mellie wants Fitz at her swearing in ceremony but he says no and he also tells her he wants a divorce. After photos of Olivia and Fitz come out, she freaks out and leaves the White House. Fitz tries to handle it by finding out who leaked the photos. Mellie offers to stand by Fitz's side but he refuses. Abby tries to get the President to speak to the press but he refuses and refuses to do what she says. Cyrus offers Abby some advise. Olivia needing a distraction decides to work a case wherein the son of a wealthy man is suspected of killing his father and he disappears. So Olivia is hired by the man's wife who's the boy's step-mother to find him. Jake offers to help her. When they find him he claims he suspects his step-mother killed him. Just as the President and his wife were going to be interviewed on TV and proclaim their loyalty and devotion to each other, Olivia admits to the press that she is having an affair with the President. So Abby gets them out of the interview. And when they hear of it, Mellie wants to handle it but Fitz wants to be honest. Mellie freaks out and leaves. While Olivia lays low because of the media coverage about her and Fitz. Fitz tries to deal with a Senator who has the power to take him down. Mellie is asked by female politicians to join them in their bid to impeach Fitz. Quinn asks a former client if he would like to work at OPA. And when it's clear the media won't back down he and the others come up with a plan to deal with them. Jake goes to Rowan to ask him about the fire at the Louvre; Rowan denies any knowledge about it. With the hearing coming to a head, Olivia tells Abby she intends to lie but Abby tells her that she shouldn't. So Fitz comes up with a plan so that she doesn't have to do that. Rowan thinks he's being taken out of the prison but instead, someone tries to take him out and fails. He then ends up in the infirmary and calls Olivia to see him. Six months after Olivia and Fitz break up, they find themselves tying to go on. Fitz is constantly calling Abby and Olivia gets back together with Jake. And she then gets a new client, the Director of the NSA. She tells Olivia that someone hacked into her computer and got some sensitive files. They learn the Director has a boyfriend who has disappeared. Olivia assumes it's him but the Director says it couldn't be. They eventually learn that someone is going to disclose something classified to the media and it's something they got from the Director. They think it's the boyfriend but they can't find him. they eventually learn that Jake is also looking for the man for the President. Abby goes to Cyrus to ask for help in how to handle Fitz. Olivia is helping Mellie write her book but Mellie doesn't exactly welcome her comments. Liz wants the Vice President to run for President but she declared she doesn't want to, so she turns to Rosen and tells him to get the Vice President to run for President and use her attraction to him to get her to do so. Olivia and the team take on some embattled Secret Service agents. Meanwhile, Abby has her hands full trying to keep Fitz in line, and Jake begins to reveal a few secrets of his own.

Olivia continues to spy on Jake while the Gladiators have to fend for themselves. Meanwhile, Susan and Mellie feel the pressure as their campaigns heat up, and Abby begins to question Cyrus' motives.

When Mellie makes a public faux pas, Olivia must decide how far she'll go to fix it. Meanwhile, the Gladiators learn valuable intel about Jake's new love interest, and David Rosen seeks advice about his love triangle with Liz North and Susan Ross.

Following the first Republican debate, Olivia is presented with damaging information about an opponent and enlists the Gladiators to verify its authenticity. Meanwhile, David deals with fallout from his dating life, and Cyrus continues to work on his own political agenda.

The election is in full swing, which means everyone is doing their best to take down their opponents, but when a potential leak threatens several candidates, they have to work together to keep their secrets safe. Boundaries are pushed and lines are crossed as we find out just how far some people are willing to go to protect themselves.

As Olivia deals with the aftermath of what she's done, she finally finds out what exactly Jake and Rowan are plotting. With their plans already in motion, Olivia is forced to try and stop it. Meanwhile, in flashbacks, we learn more about Jake's past and how he first got involved with B6-13.

A battle between Abby and Olivia threatens to keep Mellie and Susan from meeting Florida's governor.

But they learn he has a skeleton in the closet and they try to make sure it doesn't come out. Cyrus goes to see Rosen and asks him to be Vargas' running mate but he's not sure if he wants to do it. But Elizabeth wants him to and tries to convince him. But someone goes to Vargas; Eli to offer both support and a running mate, Jake. And when Eli and Cyrus are alone he threatens him with what Cyrus did; have a man pull a gun on Vargas. Edison goes to see Olivia and give her Jake's message--to rescue him from Eli.
