Rita has settled down in Molly's flat and is working at a burger joint, which is getting on Molly's nerves. When Molly sends off a job application on Rita's behalf, Rita is called for an interview and offered a teaching position at her old elementary school. And before she knows it, she is grudgingly heading back to her hometown. Meanwhile, Hjørdis, who is worried about Rita, has gotten herself a job at the same school, in order to keep an eye on her.

Rita has to stand in for another teacher in home education. But she is a terrible cook and the only meal she can cook is pasta with ketchup! However, Knud has been taught by his parents to avoid chemistry, and Rita therefore arranges a cook-off with Knud. The outcome is a little unexpected. Meanwhile Hjørdis also experiences trouble with Leas son, Allan.

Rita and Lea remember how Lærer Rostrup used to teach them about the differences between the Soviet Union and the Free World. That was in 1985 when both of the girls had a crush at a the same rebellious guy. When they meet the same guy at a old students reunion party in 2017 he hasn't exactly developed into a charming man. Hjørdis is getting increasingly worried that others might think that Uffe and her are some kind of weirdo's during an intense weekend campaign of live action role-play. At the school a bomb threat splits the staff.

Niels and Kalinka's son, Knud, is being bullied by a boy from his class, who is from a socially disadvantaged family. Rita tries to put a stop to it, but Niels and Kalinka discourage her, feeling more sorry for the bully than for his victim. Rita is invited for dinner at Lea's on a 'Family Tuesday', and Hjørdis plans Reinulf's first birthday. In 1985, Rita receives an offer from Susanne, after her mum moves out.

Rita's first graders have a class teddy bear which the pupils take turns in taking home so they can write in the teddy bear book what it has experienced there. When young Lukas doesn't want to take the teddy bear home, Rita becomes concerned. Rita, who now dines regularly with Lea and Martin, challenges their way of handling their highly sensitive child, Allan. Hjørdis struggles to accept the fact that little Reinulf is about to go to daycare. Meanwhile, in 1985, Lea and Rita are going to a school party.

A charity ball is being organized in order to raise funds for the school, which is being threatened with closure. As part of the proceedings, Hjørdis puts on a play about the vikings, with her ninth graders acting out the story of Kanute the Great, and with Allan in the lead role. Rita, Lea and Martin are feeling awkward after what happened the previous night, and they try to resume their usual relationship. Meanwhile, in 1985, Rita's father doesn't show up for a parent-teacher meeting, which worries Susanne.

Bjarne has yet to share the bad news with the rest of the teaching staff, and when he is ambushed with a surprise party to celebrate his success, he breaks down. Rita has brought along Lea and Martin to inspect her childhood home, which she is considering buying. Allan is influenced by the uncomfortable situation at home, and Hjørdis suffers as a result. In 1985, Susanne's mum is on her deathbed, and so Lea and the family travel to North Jutland without Rita, who isn't invited.

The school is being closed down, and Rita forces Bjarne to share the bad news with the staff. When Hjørdis hears this, she has second thoughts as to whether she should stay or move back. In 1985, Rita must face the consequences of her actions. So, too, in the present, where she and Lea are drifting apart, and Rita is forced to figure out who she really is, and who she wants to be.
