Newly divorced after being caught in a compromising situation with old flame Anthony civil servant Katherine is shocked to learn that she must immediately leave London to work at an immigration office in Northampton. New boss Danny purports to be a practising Muslim but is a burnt-out, drug-taking shambles and worse Katherine was once his boss. Furthermore, along with super-efficient Jenny and earnest Nathanial Katherine's new colleagues include Anthony, who is not keen to resume their affair. Not only does she have to share a small flat with Jenny and anxious department head Lucinda Jeffries she also tumbles to the fact that Danny's promotion is due to his total inefficiency, which will give the government the excuse to close the office down. After Jeffries tells her that her brief is to sack some personnel Katherine catches Danny taking drugs and having sex with his assistant Angela and warns them they are in the firing line - particularly as Danny has yet to file his long-awaited paper for the minister. At a rather dull drinks party Jeffries confides in Katherine that Jenny and Angela are at the top of her list and Katherine shocks Anthony by getting stoned herself - so that it becomes clear why she is so disdainful of him. Feeling alienated from the others Katherine spends the night with a wealthy pick-up at a country house before coming to work early where she agrees to help Danny find reasons for delaying the report. Having convinced Jeffries that the report was lost due to a computer glitch Katherine and Danny hold a brain-storming session though little is achieved. Meanwhile Anthony, told that he impregnated Katherine but she lost the child, considers resigning but changes his mind when he catches the eye of Martine, the ministerial aide come to investigate the lack of a paper. She seems to know Jeffries personally and interrogates Danny, who, using a recent date as an example, impresses her with his supposed views on immigration. However Jeffries has bad news for Jenny. suffering from a nervous tic caused by stress Katherine is none the less pleased to see that Danny has sobered up and is taking work seriously. He even gives a rehearsal of his presentation to the minister in London which passes muster with Martine, though Katherine accuses her of setting him up for failure as the speech is poor and, on hearing this, Danny allows Angela to lead him back into his bad old ways. Thus, on the train to London, Martine proposes Katherine gives the speech - which Jeffries sees as revenge on both her and the department. However Katherine is let off the hook as the train never makes it to London and, having also had sex with Anthony in a toilet, her tic disappears. Written by don @ minifie-1

As a stoned and drunk Danny wakes up in hospital and seeks out his estranged father Jeffries, Katherine, Martine and Anthony finally make it to London, where Martine confesses to Anthony that Jeffries is her mother and Jeffries recalls a painful incident from her past. Whilst waiting to see the minister Anthony passes on Martine's secret to Katherine but the presentation is a disaster as Katherine throws up and a dishevelled Danny shuffles in to admit his shortcomings and offer his resignation. Back in Northampton Nathanial and Angela offer sympathy to Jenny as she prepares to be laid off but she is not the only one as Martine is now sacked following revelations of her affair with the minister, at least allowing for a mother-daughter reconciliation. Jeffries is reconciled with Martine, but learns that the department is due for closure. Aware of this Katherine seeks work elsewhere but on return to the office is visited by boorish ex-husband Alex, who wants her back. When she refuses Anthony champions her and the men fight. The staff prepare to be sacked but, with the disgraced minister now gone, his female replacement issues a heartening announcement which will turn things round for them - especially Katherine - and allow three office romances to flourish.
