When Nick gets fired yet again for being 'chronically unemployable' Susan reluctantly takes him on as a tour guide but this too comes to grief when he takes her tourists to the pub and gets them drunk before bringing them home. Ben is surprised that Janey has so many different boyfriends - apart from Stupid Brian, who refuses to believe he has been dumped - and calls her a prostitute - though their combined coaching gets her through her exams. After a romantic weekend away Susan believes that she is pregnant - much to Ben's dismay and, hearing his assistant Trudy go on about babies, he snaps and offends a pregnant patient by saying how awful children are. When Susan finds that Janey doesn't trust her, she lets her have a teenage party alone while she is in Oxford with Ben. However the two lose confidence and return, only to be trapped in their bedroom when the guests arrive. When a 93-year old aunt dies Ben goes to Leeds for the funeral and, in the absence of flu-stricken Susan, takes Nick with him - though he would have preferred to take Janey or Michael. The run down hotel in which the couple stay seems to have been a crime scene with bodies being carried out, though Nick only has eyes for chambermaid Rita, whom he hopes to bed - and does, though it's a case of three of a bed as father and son must share. Ben gets another dental assistant but unfortunately she faints at the sight of blood whilst Janey, who is taking driving lessons, finds that nobody is prepared to sit in with her. However Ben's biggest problem is his neighbour Mr Casey, whose dog Gemma fouls the Harpers' garden. When Ben complains Mr Casey counters by pointing out that the Harpers' untidy garden and ramshackle shed are a disgrace to the neighbourhood. Scott feels unwell and is put in the Harpers' bed. Next morning he is discovered to be dead and Susan blames herself for arguing with him but it turns out that he had a heart attack in his sleep. Ben is jealous of Andy's wealthy life-style and, on his advice, invests his college fund in the stock market. When the prices soar Ben refuses to sell and rather wishes he had. when the situation changes. Nick is also after making money - by trying to sell is body parts on the Internet.
