A man is playing a flute in front on Monk's building and is burning candles and putting flowers on the street. Monk approaches the man and asks him to stop but he says he is doing all of the things for his dead wife, She was killed at this spot by a hit and run driver. The man is from Nigeria and he was coming to visit his wife who was in the city for a conference when she was killed. Monk takes him in and he looks into his wife's death. Stollemeyer is investigating the death of a maid and wants Monk to help. But Monk prefers to help the Nigerian, Stollemeyer tells Monk he is doing this because he still doesn't know what happened to Trudy. Written by [email protected]

After Stottlemeyer, Disher and Monk are shredded on the stand in a murder case, causing the accused to go free, Monk loses his confidence. Meanwhile, Disher tries to help a boy he used to mentor who is accused of another murder.

Natalie's daughter Julie appears in a play. When a critic give her a bad review, Natalie sets out to prove that he didn't watch her performance. An elderly woman is out power-walking past a little league baseball field when a stray baseball hits her on the forehead, killing her. A few days later, some of her relatives go to her house to pick up her belongings, and find a voodoo doll sitting in a box that appeared to predict her death. Monk is brought in to investigate the case. But as other voodoo dolls arrive, seemingly predicting two more deaths, he finds that Natalie is afraid of voodoo due to an incident in her past, which comes to light after the person making the dolls sends one to Natalie predicting that she will be decapitated. Natalie is determined to throw a surprise party for Mr. Monk, even though he's certain that she can't do it. Meanwhile, a janitor is killed shortly before a businessman is poisoned. Mr. Monk is distracted during the case, because he's always on the look out for a surprise party being sprung on him, and also obsessed with a new vacuum cleaner! Monk tries to get reinstated but a committee member, Captain Willis is dead set against reinstating Monk. Monk joins Stollemeyer and Discher who are investigating a robbery. But Monk can't help but brood about Willis' resistance. Discher then reveals that he is going camping with some children one of whom is Willis' son. Monk gets his badge back. But he learns that he will not be working with Stottlemeyer and can't have Natalie with him. On his first day, a cop dies and all signs led everyone to believe it's a suicide but Monk doesn't think so. And he raises questions about the cop which the other cops he works with don't want raised. But he continues to investigate while wondering if being a cop again is what he really wants.
