The Molander family move from Stockholm to the market town of Alingsås and must quickly learn to adapt. Olof Molander has been offered a job as a principal at a school for music while Fanny Molander is not too pleased with her mother-in-law and her offhand remarks. Anna-Karin Westin, a famous opera singer and an old friend of Olof's has promised to give a concert with Olof's classical orchestra. Fanny has started working at a local health clinic but her non-prescription of penicillin is not appreciated by some patients. Also, Alva has found a friend who also plays the violin. Olof plan to conduct the Musical Society performing Mozart's Requiem at the local church. Alva has made a new friend, Mijan, and has decided to quit playing the violin, despite her father's protests. Practicing for Mozart's Requiem, Olof's position as conductor is suddenly challenged by the choir master Stefan. Linus has fallen in love with Victoria, cellist in the Musical Society. Mats Albertsson, the new corporate sponsor of the Musical Society, is having the orchestra playing at a company anniversary, but his micro management of the musical selection is annoying Olof. On Alva's birthday she is given an expensive set of coffee cups which she instantly sells to buy a pair of boots. Linus is having problem with perspiration, in particular when Victoria is around. Christmas is approaching. Alva has a boyfriend with a motor bike and tattoos which causes great apprehension for her mother. Fanny is uneasy about the Christmas and all the must-do's it entails. A Chechen refugee family has a 15 year old daughter who is a very gifted violin player. Arne suffers a mild stroke. Fanny goes to a health care conference and quite unexpectedly Farshad shows up. Olof and Fanny have serious marital problems. Olof's parents have bought an expensive alarm system. Marit has serious doubts about her marriage with Stefan and her future as a priest. Fanny insists that Linus begin to exercise. After Fanny confessed her infidelity, Olof and Fanny are not on speaking terms. Olof, Linus and Arne go on a fishing trip but Olof is not focusing on the fishing. Fanny give permission to Alva to go on a non-alcoholic sleep-over at a friend's house but before leaving she steals liquor from her parents' liquor cabinet.
