Bullying snob Alistair Kingslake is killed with a golf iron at the Whiteoaks golf club. After another member, Miles Tully, tells Barnaby about illegal gambling among players, another member, who has had an 'odd phone call' is also slain. A figure in a blue tracksuit is seen at both murders. In fact there have been unreported assaults on members over the months. Barnaby discovers that the gambling is rife and the social-climbing steward , Mrs. Fountain, and her two warring sons are lending money to the gamblers and assaulting them if they fail to pay. It's sold at an auction for 400 000 pounds to a collector. The same night, the woman who found it is found murdered in her home. After a break-in at Causton Museum where an animal skeleton is stolen ex-spy Brenda Packard tells Barnaby that Allenby House, owned by testy ex-spymaster Malcolm Frazer, is a safe house for agents. Geoffrey Larkin, a visiting former agent, has a bitter argument with Frazer, who accuses him of treachery when they were spying in Berlin during the Cold war. Larkin threatens Frazer with a dossier marked 'Wolfman' and next day is murdered, seemingly by a wild animal, the legendary Beast of Midsomer. Frazer's drunkard son Nicky, another ex-spy ,is killed in identical fashion but Barnaby realizes that the 'Beast' is but a cover. DCI Barnaby and DS Jones investigate the apparent murder of Emily Harte who was run off the road by a car while cycling late at night. The evidence at the scene also suggests that the driver then backed up over her to make sure the job was done. She was a member of the local cycling club and was in a relationship with George Jeffers a professor at the local college. Barnaby quickly concludes that Jeffers was the driver's intended target. Jeffers had several people who might want to get at him. His ex-wife Melanie felt that she was losing her son as he too was spending more time with his father and Emily. Then there's a disagreement with a local technology firm that has built a new air traffic control system built on his theories. Jeffers thinks there a serious flaw and has threatened to go public and the company's CEO Clinton Finn has already taken steps to get the college on his side by endowing a new research building. The police investigate the murder of Richard Tanner who was stabbed and found dead in the model village in Little Worthy tied to the ground like Gulliver from Gulliver's Travels. He was found by the grounds-keeper and model maker Ben Moss who has worked for the owners, sisters Hillary and Harriet Comptom. Tanner wasn't very well liked in the village and was viewed as a troublemaker by many. He was known to have had romantic entanglements with the local school teacher Rebecca Rix and Krista Palfrey, daughter of the local hotel owner Edward Palfrey. He wasn't very pleased with his daughter's relationship Tanner and he didn't like the way Krista treated his girlfriend, Berrnice, leading to a tension-filled home situation. At the annual silly boat race to mark the end of the tourist season, another person is killed and later still there is a third victim. There is clearly someone in the village who is out for revenge. DCI Barnaby finds himself in charge of investigating The Creeper, a man who has been entering peoples homes in the dead of night, after the Chief Constable becomes the latest victim. It all becomes more serious when after one of the burglaries, a man is found dead in his bed. The dead man is David roper, a ghostwriter by profession who was staying with the Chettam family. They had spent the previous evening at the home of Jack Filby who now owned the Chettham estate forcing the family to live in the dower house. Filby and roper had a very loud argument after dinner with Roper, a reformed alcoholic, storming out of the house with a bottle of brandy in hand. He made it back to the dower house and was put to bed. The mystery grows when a second attendee at the same dinner is murdered and the Creeper visits the Barnabys in the dead of night, not to steal anything but to leave behind two clues.
