Beaver, however, feels uncomfortable about not wearing a suit to a formal event, especially since their fathers will be there, but he also doesn't want to stick out like a sore thumb if none of the other guys are going to be dressed formally. In his mind, Eddie is achieving his goal as he believes the foreman is providing him with extra favors. Upon this news, Beaver feels like the mad but forgotten member of the household. In order for Beaver to get back at Wally but still not totally ruin the party, Gilbert suggests that Beaver plays some gags, like putting fake cheese in the sandwiches and rubber spiders in the curtains, which Beaver does decide to do. On the day of the party, Wally, on a suggestion from his parents, has a change of heart and decides to let Beaver come to the party. Wally is heading over to his girlfriend Julie Foster's house for an impromptu visit, with the expectation that she'll be at home with nothing to do but wait for him. What Wally finds out, as does his family and his friends, is that Julie has a previous engagement: a date with someone else. That date is with Wayne Gregory, a new student to their school. Wally learns through the grapevine that Julie finds Wayne mature, while Wally naive and immature in comparison. Wally comes to the conclusion that Wayne's perceived maturity is due solely to the fact that he has a mustache. With a one week vacation from school on the horizon, Wally plans to grow a mustache within that time to impress Julie. Although his parents don't like the idea of the facial hair, they are not going to forbid him from growing it or keeping it for the first day back at school. Wally has saved up $180 to buy a car. The one he has his eyes set on is through a boy about his age named Frank, that car which Lumpy, the expert, says is a bomb, and which Frank is selling for $220. Wally realizes that he is going to need the approval of his parents before he can buy it. He and Beaver are surprised at the nature of the resulting discussion with their father, who had long ago anticipated such a day and as such prepared himself for what he was going to say. Ward provides his approval on several conditions including having final say on the actual car. But in that discussion, Wally learns that he hadn't even considered all operating costs, the most important and largest component being insurance, which he learns is almost as expensive as the car itself. After discussion with June, Ward agrees to add his further support of chipping in for the insurance. Wally gets a job as a parking valet at a wedding reception. Ward and June don't like the idea, but Mr. Langley, the father of the bride, is providing the necessary insurance, and Wally has shown to be a responsible driver thus far, so they allow him to take the job. However, they once again become concerned when Wally plans on asking Eddie and Lumpy to help him, as although Wally can control what he himself does, he has no control over his friends, who have proved to be irresponsible in the past, and Wally is ultimately responsible for them at the job. Lumpy ends up not being able to do the work, leaving it to Wally and Eddie. The job goes well enough, until the neighborhood gets overloaded with cars. Eddie ends up parking a car in what he doesn't see as a private tow away zone, what's worse being that the car in question belongs to blow-hard Fred Rutherford. Beaver feels wrong about helping Mr. Langley cheat. That guilt that Beaver feels gets worse first when Mr. Langley provides Beaver with an exorbitant tip - which to him almost feels like a payoff for his silence - and second when he learns that the bet itself was not for some measly sum but rather $500. Upon reflection, Wally understands why he wouldn't have got one while Lumpy did, at least from an athletic perspective. Wally is truly happy for Lumpy and wants to congratulate him by throwing him a party. Lumpy, for perhaps the first time in his life, receives much adulation, even from girls who never would have given him the time of day before, this adulation which he and his father are enjoying. But halfway through the party, after speaking to his father on the telephone, Lumpy becomes sullen as he learns he didn't get the scholarship because he flunked one of his high school classes. Beaver is just about ready to head off with Wally and Eddie to work on installing Eddie's new car radio when June stops him to do a chore - namely go to the store - which he promised to do earlier but has not yet done. Angry, Beaver decides to give his mother the cold shoulder while pay extra special attention to his father. While Wally knows exactly what Beaver is up to, June does notice that Beaver is acting strangely, namely being curt with her, only responding the necessary minimum to anything she asks or says, while acting especially nice to Ward. Ward doesn't see what Beaver is doing until he looks specifically for what June is saying, after which he agrees. June surmises correctly the incident causing the problem. Ward intends to have a chat with Beaver about his behavior, while June convinces him to let it be and let Beaver resolve the issue on his own. As such, Ward and June make Beaver start reading the book at the exclusion of all else. Beaver still finds it difficult as for whatever reason, he is having a hard time getting into the story. Gilbert believes Beaver has a way out of his predicament when he sees that a movie version of the book is airing on television on Sunday night, the night before the report is due. Beaver doesn't want to give in to Gilbert's idea, and still tries to read the book. When Sunday night rolls around, Beaver is still nowhere close to being finished reading the book, and Gilbert once again encourages Beaver to at least watch the movie, which the two do together without Ward, June or Wally knowing that they are doing so. They decide to look through the diplomas to see if one of their classmates will be graduating. But what they also find is that there is no diploma for another student, namely Beaver, who now believes that his slacking off in these last few days has indeed led to him not graduating. Beaver, who confides in Wally, has to figure out what he can do to make up for these last few days so that he can graduate, or else figure out how to break the news to his parents, which may be all the more important as both Uncle Billy and Aunt Martha are coming from out of town specifically to attend Beaver's graduation exercises.
