Successful restaurateur Jimmy Martino is surprised by the appearance of his adult son, Gerald and his baby daughter, Edie.

Gerald wants to spend some time with him and Edie but he's always busy. He then invites Jimmy to come with them when they go to the beach with his mom and Edie's mom. But Jimmy has an important thing to go to on that day. But his staff guilts him into going. Jimmy joins Gerald for his game night with his mother. And when he does poorly when asked questions about Gerald because he doesn't know much about him. So he decides to ask Gerald to spend some time with him. And what they do is drink and when Gerald runs off, Jimmy asks his mother to help him find Gerald. Annelisse asks Jimmy to let her do something and what he wants is to hire another bartender to make cocktails which their current bartender doesn't do. And the one she chooses doesn't get along with the bartender he runs off and says Jimmy will stand by him because he was the one who gave Jimmy his first job. When Jimmy misses Edie's birthday party that Sara and Gerald were throwing in the park, he decides to make up for it by throwing Edie a party at his restaurant. He drags Annelisse, who was at the cemetery, in to help and she ends having to take the children to the bathroom. Jimmy brings in a magician whose act freaks the children, And Gerald asked him to get Big Bird but instead got a big bird, so he goes out and borrows a chicken costume a guy who works at a chicken restaurant is wearing. Jimmy invites Sara's brother which she told him not to. She says she told him that Jimmy blew her off when he found out she was pregnant when in reality he didn't because he didn't know. To avoid admitting he's a grandfather, Jimmy tells a preschool admissions counselor that he's Edie's father. During the preschool's open house, Gerald tells the same counselor that he's Edie's father leading her to believe they are a gay couple. The counselor tells them that being gay will help their chances of Edie being admitted to the preschool so they continue the ruse.

Jimmy goes out with Sara's co-worker, but when she is not impressed, Jimmy turns to Sara for pointers.

In hopes of helping Gerald score with the ladies, Jimmy takes him out for a swanky night on the town. But when Gerald falls for a party girl, Jimmy fears she may be into Gerald for the wrong reasons.

It's Thanksgiving and Jimmy usual plans is to go away with a hot girl. But because he now knows about Gerald, he decides to make a quick appearance and leave, which he does. But just as he's about to leave, Sara's ex, Bruce who was essentially Gerald's substitute father shows up and Jimmy can't accept the fact that Gerald had someone before Jimmy know about him decides to stay and tries to show Bruce up. Jimmy hires Gerald as the new host at his restaurant and gives him a crash course in hospitality. Meanwhile, Vanessa teaches Sara how to take sexy photos for Bruce, and Annelise encourages Ravi to crack down on the comedy in the kitchen.

They tell Jimmy that Edie needs a procedure. They learn that Jimmy hasn't had a physical in years. Sara then tricks Jimmy to go to her doctor. He finds something but he tells Jimmy they need to do a biopsy to know what it is but it'll take a few days. So he starts to freak out, eventually he takes Edie on the day of her procedure and runs away. When Jimmy reunites with his old buddies in the sat pack, Ronnie gives him a hard time about his new life as a family man.

While Jimmy is with Edie a woman who says she's an agent who specializes in child models would like him to bring Edie in for a photo test. When he tells them about it, Sara and Gerald say no. Later Vanessa goes to Jimmy alone and tells him she's behind him. They bring Edie in and she can't stop crying when they take her picture. Sara upon learning what they did goes there to get Edie but when she calms down when Sara holds her. they offer Sara a part and she accepts. To give the restaurant a hipper vibe, Jimmy tosses a bash for a big pop star and gives the place a 1980s look. However, Ravi's idea to boost reservations is to prepare guacamole table side.

In an effort to prove that he doesn't always need validation from women, Jimmy spends an evening at a Korean spa with Ravi, Gerald and a few guys from the restaurant. Meanwhile, Sara, Vanessa and Annelise go out for a girls' night at the hottest new bar in Los Angeles.

When Edie is bitten at school, Jimmy and Sara go to great lengths to find out who did it. Meanwhile, Ravi sets up a meeting for Gerald and Vanessa to meet a flashy tech investor, but once they meet him, they are not so sure they want to do business with him.

Jimmy tries to protect Gerald from an Internet bully; when Sara and Vanessa visit the bully's mother, things get worse.

When Sara invites Jimmy to accompany her to an ex's party and play the role of her boyfriend, Jimmy realizes his feelings for Sara may be deeper than he thought. At home, Gerald and Vanessa panic about their parenting abilities when Edie starts acting out.

Jimmy finds himself out of his element when he falls for a stunning, powerhouse CEO who always manages to be one step ahead of him.
