Seasoned detective Emmett Carver is hired, despite a tainted episode in San Francisco, as chief detective in northern Californian small beach town Gracepoint, instead of local police detective Ellie Miller. Their first case is the death, a staged cliff jump 'suicide' after a stump trauma, of Danny Solano, pre-teen class buddy of Ellie's son, who secretly tries to delete all traces of their recent contacts. When the Solano family demands disclosure, they are show Danny was shoplifting and his sister Chloe's lover, dodgy student Dean Iverson, bickered bitterly with the boy he gave a ride 'home' but actually took along to buy cocaine for Chloe's employer Gemma's client. Reverend Paul grimly tells-off alleged psychic Pete Lawson, but Mark is as bitterly against him planning a memorial service for Danny. Mystery suspects are added, including a former local. Thanks to Owen, a former member of his nature observers youth club, old Jack Reinhold is exposed as having changed his name before moving to town after a conviction for sexual child abuse, yet swears being innocent and cured. Forensic indications suggest Danny's murder may fit a state-wide serial killer's MO. Reverend Paul's nocturnal sleepless activity and connection to the Solanas, notably Beth, are scrutinized. her indiscretion forces Carver to organize a press conference. Carver's landlady learns about his cardiac condition by finding him during a fit, in time to be saved in hospital. Although Carver joins Paul's efforts to shut up self-declared clairvoyant technician Raymond Connelly, his predictions seem to come trough, as when a boat is torched which was used to transport Danny's corpse. After reverend Paul Coates's remarkable appeal for calm and tolerance during Jack's funeral service, Gracefield must pull together when the terrifying news arrives that the milers' son Tom goes missing, despite father Jim having left him only very close to school. Mark Solano takes charge of the mass search, which for now only finds Tom's abandoned bicycle. The mystery vet named by Jack, Lars Pierson, is finally found in a remote cabin, where Tom seemed to be heading for. He's on anti-psychotic medication but Carver gets him to remember he sort of advised Tom about traveling as far as Budapest. carver is surprised that his daughter, who rarely reacted by phone, now turns up unannounced, but he can't tel her about his cardiac peril or take time from the case, so she leaves soon. Carver keeps Ellie on a short leash, realizing her emotional attitude is detrimental. That is even more true when Carver realizes Tommy's attempt to destroy the evidence on his computer, e-mails with Danny, is key. When Joe Miller senses his son may become a suspect, he ends the interview, but Carver now turns the screws on him. Joe admits to have nurtured an unsuitable interest in the boy, whom he saw regularly behind mark's back, but swears never to have abused him, claiming Danny's fall was a terrible accident in nocturnal confusion.
