Accident-prone Gustav Larson comes to the outpost (Dragon's Edge) to join the Dragon Riders, but after getting chewed out by Hiccup for almost losing the Dragon Eye, he leaves, only to be captured by Dagur's men. As the Riders deal with an elusive Rumblehorn repeatedly attacking their outpost, Gobber arrives to recall Hiccup back to Berk to deal with his father, whose orneriness has run amok. As Ruffnut and Tuffnut succeed at building a tower (or two or three), Fishlegs, studying the Dragon Eye, discovers the location of legendary island Dark Deep, the nearly mythical homeland of Gronkles (Meatlug's dragon species). Flying there with Hiccup, they discover resident Gronkles cowed under the formidable presence of a large, tumbling dragon. Classifying it as a Catastrophic Quaken, Hiccup's all for leaving the situation alone and letting nature take its course, but Fishlegs enlists Snotlout's aid in using dirty tactics to get the Quaken off the island instead. A rogue Dragon Rider aboard a heretofore unseen Razorwhip starts attacking ships. Hiccup and his team investigate. Almost completely bested by this attacker, the Dragon Riders finally unmask the rider as the familiar Heather. Their renewed acquaintance is a generally happy one, but why she's out attacking ships is information she's quite unwilling to share, so Hiccup investigates on his own. Written by statmanjeff

Heather continues to pursue her vendetta, leading the Dragon Riders to attack Dagur while he's at sea and about to increase his armada with dragon-proof ships, but Stoick's seal on Heather's horn brings Hiccup to ask his dad a very important question - Is Heather my sister? - bringing an unknown relationship to light. While demonstrating his new flight suit invention (to help when riders become separated in mid flight from their dragons), Hiccup and the Riders find a wounded Speed Stinger abandoned by its pack. Nocturnal and vulnerable to attack by diurnal predators such as wild boars, Hiccup has the young flightless dragon brought back to their island to nurse it to health before releasing it back into the wild; however, this particular strain of Speed Stingers can run on water and are very protective of their pack members. Snotlout finds himself at the losing end of a love triangle when Hookfang abandons him to answer a call from a female Monstrous Nightmare. Rejected, Snotlout, rather than consider mastering another dragon, decides to quit being a Rider altogether, but that may change once another Monstrous Nightmare appears, a larger male determined to dominate Hookfang and destroy the female's clutch of eggs.
