Since it's been a while since they've done one, Lou wants to do a location feature. After brainstorming with Mary, Murray and Ted, Lou decides on Murray's idea of life at a popular single's bar called Valentino's. Lou's plan is to send Mary and Murray to the bar to do some undercover reconnaissance at Valentino's for a week before sending in a live television crew to give the piece an off the cuff feel. Since Marie feels uncomfortable about Murray frequenting such a bar, even for work, Lou reluctantly agrees to let Mary do the recon visits on her own... sort of. But after those visits, meeting the regular patrons, hearing their stories and experiencing how a single person acts and is acted upon at the bar, Mary and company still don't have a fresh angle for the piece. They decide to let the regular patrons tell their own stories on the air, just hoping that they will have something insightful to say. Mary receives the latest edition of the Viking Voice, the alumni magazine of her alma mater, Leif Erickson High, which is located in the upstate Minnesota town of Roseburg. The magazine, edited by Estelle Proust née Kamser who always had it in for Mary (especially since Mary was named Viking Queen of their class of '59 over Estelle), features an article on Mary's still single status, with Estelle further speculating that perhaps Mary should get back together with her old boyfriend, Howard Arnell, who Mary could no longer date since he was so needy. It's the night of Minneapolis' civic election. The station is providing election coverage until a winner is declared. Lou puts Mary in charge as floor director against her own wishes as she isn't a take charge person to who people will listen. Before coverage even starts, Mary has some problems due to the snowstorm which has hit Minneapolis. Key people, such as the political analyst, the tote board operator and some of the telephone operators, can't make it into the studio, meaning that Mary has to find some substitutes, such as Rhoda, to fill the positions. But the on-air coverage begins with a thud when the storm cuts off all communication to the station, including the teletype with the election results and the telephone lines. Due to commitments to sponsors, they can't preempt the scheduled coverage with other programming.
