Michael Upton wants some peace and quiet to study (again) but is cajoled into taking part in a car rally. He is partnered with the mega posh Fiona who doesn't seem that concerned about making a quick start. They stop off to visit her sister and brother-in-law. As the weather is so bad they stay the night. Fiona's sister is heavily pregnant and about to give birth. Michael sends Fiona out to get the doctor as he doesn't think he can cope. She takes half an hour getting ready and making some tea before Michael can get her to leave. He practices delivering a baby by using a teddy bear and the space between the bars on a wooden chair. When it is time for him to help he faints. On the drive back from the doctors Fiona is seen and followed by Duncan Waring and many other fellow students. They arrive back at the house to find the baby has been safely delivered and go down stairs to drink some champagne. It turns out that the baby was delivered by Mr. Cook the gardener. He moves his stuff into one and resists the advances of the rather fit girl who let him the room for some reason. Her mother arrives home finds a skeleton in Michael's new room and think he is trying to murder his daughter. He doesn't even enter the next house he goes to see due to an extremely camp gentleman who answers the door. He is put off the third room due to the dead body of the previous occupant still being in the bed. He takes the rather spacious fourth room he visits for only two pound a week. After he moves in he finds it has also been let to Duncan Waring, Dick Stuart-Clark, Huw Evans, Dave Briddock and the latter's girlfriend Helga. He also leaves him a plastic skeleton on approval which later gets burnt. Dave Briddock makes his first appearance in the series as does Huw Edwards. Later on there is supposed to be a dance at the bar. Most of the lads get drunk and start hassling Alice. Michael jumps in to rescue her and they go to his room so she can dry off. Jealous that he might pull, his friends leave various unsuitable items around his room and then hide in the room next door. At first Alice wants to leave but then she and Michael work out what is going on and make suitable noises to fool the boys next door into thinking they are getting it on. The inoffensive Reverend Babbington chokes to death at a cocktail party he is attending with his wife at the home of famous actor Sir Charles Cartwright. Some time later Sir Bartholomew Strange, an eminent doctor and friend of Cartwright, also dies of poisoning at a dinner party he is giving miles away. There appears to be no link between the two deaths but Poirot, assisted by Cartwright, offers to help Superintendent Crossfield in the investigation and discovers that a mysterious butler with a birthmark on his wrist was hired for the night and appeared to share a joke with the dead doctor. This man has now vanished and would seem to the killer. A third death, that of a sanatorium patient who has written to Poirot, would appear to link to the doctor's murder and there is certainly a secret which somebody will go to any lengths to conceal - but who would gain from the death of a harmless old vicar? Valerie was a popular visitor to Norman, an unofficial patient dying of emphysema contracted from working at an asbestos factory where Andrew was the medical officer. Stefan had previously worked at a sinister military establishment, Hopewood, where Gently finds himself stone-walled, but where Stefan had visited the day before his death. Following a tip-off Gently and Bacchus acquire a suitcase full of stolen passports dropped by petty crook Jimmy Cochran. Cochran's old flame Maggie Alderton worked in the office where they were issued and is found raped and strangled next day, the father of her child being identified as one Thomas Ali, for whom she was apparently trying to secure a passport. Cochran is in a turf war with some Arab boys, also involved in dodgy passports and Maggie's transvestite boss is also less innocent than he first appears. However, facts prove Ali and Cochran to be father and son and neither has killed Maggie, a pawn in the whole scam. Gently and Bacchus investigate when elderly Alfred Peachment is found murdered in the grounds of the large house where he lived alone, formerly a children's home which he superintended but now closed for several years. The house was being sold, against his wishes, by a committee headed by his ex-wife and her brother, the local doctor, to the seemingly callous property developer Cora Davidson. Harry, Alfred's mute, simple-minded gardener, is the chief suspect and he attacks Bacchus.
