After finding a nude Dale in bed with them Ben and Rachel aim to set him up with one of her friends, Natalie, who finds him gorgeous and fascinating. They date but nothing happens as Dale does not believe she is the Special One. Medic Steve is facing a tribunal for gross misconduct and blackmails Ken into representing him or else he will tell Lorna the vasectomy never went ahead. Unfortunately Ken has ingested some drugs and acts very oddly at the hearing, his boss Charles taking over and winning the case.

The local animal shelter visits with dogs for the residents to stroke and Derek's favourite is little terrier Ivor so he is heart-broken to be told that Ivor is old and cancerous and has to be put down. Hannah is also under a lot of stress as Tom decides that he needs to go back to the Merchant Navy, which she sees as their splitting up. She can also do without Kev's attempts at erotic art and robot building which bring him into conflict with the loathsome Geoff. Derek surprises everybody with his knowledge of sign language when a deaf woman applies to be a resident, after which he joins an outing to London Zoo where he enjoys himself with the animals and Vicky is charmed by Andy, a resting actor working at the zoo, with whom she makes a date. Back at the home the callous, sadistic Geoff is in charge, making it clear that he despises the old folk. There is much celebration at the home as Hannah discovers that she is pregnant, after which she sees off a loutish boyfriend of Vicki with a rolling pin.
