Eight years after being listed as missing in action and presumed dead in Iraq, Marine Corps Sgt. Nicholas Brody is found alive in an Al Qaeda prison. Virgil and Carrie's illegal surveillance of the Brody home is covered for a month by a dodgy court order Saul Berenson gets from 'vulnerable' judge Jeffrey Turner. Unfortunately Carrie's surveillance crew failed to install cameras in the garage, where Nicholas piously performs Muslim prayers. Inside, he's rather aloof with his family and suffers torture nightmares during which he hurtfully grabs his wife. Young son Chris bravely handles witnessing the sergeant decking a provocative reporter with a single throat punch. The theory his hand twitches are a code is virtually dismissed in Langley. Although Carrie obsessively claims there must be a link, she's ordered to concentrate solely on protecting her undercover, a pleasure girl recruited for Saudi prince Farid Bin Abbud, who spotted Al Qaida leader aboard his yacht. Nicholas Brody quickly proves himself a welcome father for already doting son Chris and even brat Dana, who for his sake swallows her objections to a hero's perfect family TV show, despite her mother's adultery. Prince Farid Bin Abbud nearly catches Lynne Reed copying his cellphone, which yields no information about financial transactions the CIA hopes to trace, and gives her a precious diamond necklace. Since the CIA refused to provide a protection team and Carrie and Virgil fail to trace her in time, her murderer can easily escape with the necklace. His behavior at home remains eerily distant, sneers at captain Mike Faber, now his military chaperon, suggest he may suspect the adultery. Saul Berenson orders the spy cameras in the Brody home, for which the court order period expired, to be removed. Carrie's team must comply, but she approaches Nicholas in a veterans support group. Deputy CIA director David Estes, informally motivated by a vice-presidential policy advisor, recruits an equally ambitious colleague to spy on Carrie as part of the team assigned to check out of the diamond necklace was a masked terrorist payment to Abu Nazir, who feels unsafe. Afsal Hamid, the Syrian last survivor of Brody's prison guards and torturers, has been arrested and extradited by the Pakistani secret service. Saul Berenson can barely prevent Carrie, who steals psycho-pharmaceuticals from her father after her sister rationed hers, from wrecking her career by opposing Brody being used for the interrogation. It seems to yield results, but shortly after the deputy director allows Brody to vent his feelings to Afsal, the key prisoner, who seemed ready to trade information for his family's safety, commits suicide with a mysteriously smuggled-in mini-razor blade. After Afsal Hamid's suicide, the director, consulted above his deputy's head, allows all eleven agents and soldiers known to have had opportunity to pass on a razor lie-detector-tested. Brody is included and asks for a delay after a frustrating reunion with war comrades at a funeral where Mike's adultery is exposed, leading to a fight and Brody getting drunk. He still beats the polygraph, but a control question proves that must be a trick, as it concerns the adultery Carrie committed with him. Brody and Carrie spend a weekend of sex and relaxation in her wood cabin, but he soon realizes she's spying on him and insists on truth time, ending up in a bitter break-up, just when new information changes everything. Saul decides to make the long drive from Mexico, where he arrest her, all the way to Virginia with Raquem's surviving white American lover Aileen to talk into her, and indeed she seems prepared to cooperate for a deal. The CIA and FBI manhunt for Tom Walker continues after he managed to escape following his tracked telephone call with Helen. The resulting shooting at the mosque, which led to the death of two innocent mosque goers, is causing a public relations problem, especially as eyewitness accounts differ from that of the official FBI statement regarding whether the FBI had any provocation for shooting, and if the FBI indeed did shoot first. Despite knowing he is doing good work in the community, Carrie is certain the imam knows more than he is stating publicly about whether there was any relationship between Walker and the mosque. Saul thinks he knows a way for Carrie to get that information, as Carrie's heavy handed approach with the imam is getting her nowhere, he who wants some sort of justice for the shooting victims' families. To bypass his immunity, he's blackmailed with his gambling debts and anti-Islamic gay bathhouse pleasures, enough to ruin his entirely Westernized family. Brody enjoys family life, especially blossoming son Chris, and preparing for his congressional campaign. Vice-President Walden and his team are making preparations for the announcement of his candidacy for President, and several different factions are on their own mission for the event. David tries to convince him that if he is set on going ahead with the announcement at this time, that he do it in a more secured setting as Walker is still at large. Walker has to find a way into the secured zone to be able to have clear and undetected access for his shot. Brody not only prepares himself for his final suicide bomb mission, but also videotapes a confession for later viewing about his view that the Vice-President, who ordered the attack that killed several children including Abu Nazir's son but who publicly blamed that attack on Al Qaeda, is the true terrorist. Brody has to decide if he will ultimately go through with the plan or if there is another better option about which his backers will support.
